I renamed my new group “Blog Post buttons”. You can right-click the “New Group (Custom)” item or you can select it and click the “New Group” button at the bottom right (near the OK button). Once you have the new group added, you may want to change the name of it. See Figure 6 for the screenshot after the New Group is added. Another method is to right-click on the Home tab (in the list on the right) and choose “New Group”. See Figure 3 above.įor this example, I selected the Home tab and created a new group there. Once it is highlighted, you can click the “New Group” button on the bottom right (down by the OK button). To create the new group, select the tab (on the right side of the screen) where you want it located. Then, you can rename the new group and start adding items to it. In order to add a button or command, you need to create a new group. If you do not want to create a new tab, you can add commands to any existing tab. Type in the group name you would like and click OK. You can change the name by selecting “New Group (Custom)” and clicking the “Rename” button.

If you cannot see the group, click the plus sign next to your new tab item. Under your new tab in the list is “New Group (Custom)”. See Figure 5.īefore you can add any commands/buttons to the tab, you have to have a group where you add them. I decided to call my new tab “Angela’s Favorites”. It is in the same group of buttons where you found the “New Tab” button. Select the item “New Tab (Custom) and click the “Rename” button at the bottom right. My guess is that the first thing you will want to do is to rename it. Microsoft gives it the default name of “New Tab”. Look on the right main section to find where it put your new tab. Figure 4 shows what your Word Options screen will look like after selecting “New Tab”. To add a new tab, click the “New Tab” button at the bottom right (See Figure 3) just above the OK button. We will go over adding commands in the next section. Don’t worry about the rest of the screen just yet. By clicking the plus sign next to each group you can expand the group to show individual buttons. You will see the tabs and can click the plus sign next to each one to see the groups of buttons and commands. The right side shows you the tabs, ribbons, and commands already there. The left side includes the list of everything available for you to put on your ribbon. The Customize Ribbon screen has two main sections. (Note: A shortcut I like to get to the Customize window is to right-click on any ribbon and choose Customize Ribbon.) On the left side of the Options dialog box (I am using the options in Word for this example) choose “Customize Ribbon”. Click on the File tab and choose Options.

To get to the place to set up a new tab or to customize the ribbon, you need to go to the Backstage section. Thankfully, Microsoft heard our collective groaning and made it easy to customize our buttons on the ribbon. In many of my training sessions I hear complaints about wanting to change the tabs and ribbons around instead of having to live with what Microsoft thinks is best. The default tabs are great, but sometimes wouldn’t it be nice to have your most used buttons on a single ribbon?

If you are working with Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013, you will like the ability to customize your tabs and ribbons.
